What’s going on in the Tan world? New Regulations and what they mean..

You may or may not have heard the hype, but a HUGE change is happening in the tanning industry with the introduction of new regulations to ingredients in tan that cause the depth and intensity of colour achieved by our loved tanning products.

This European directive comes into effect on March 31 2022, and limits the use of dihydroxyacetone (DHA), the colourant that darkens the skin, to a maximum of 10% in a bottle of fake tan based on safety data evaluated by the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS).

DHA is a colourless sugar that causes a chemical reaction in the skin and reacts with the oils and amino acids in the skin to temporarily darken it and create a natural sun-kissed tan.

Because DHA affects the outer cells of the skin, it is generally considered safe to use (though it could irritate sensitive skin.) There are very few studies done on the effects of DHA, however it is thought to cause contact dermatitis in high concentrations.

Dihydroxyacetone has been regulated in the United States as a colourant with strict limitations, but was previously used without restriction in the European Union, but from March 31st this all changes.. so what does that mean?

Well luckily our Tan suppliers have been working away in the background to source alternative ingredients and tan enhancers to create new formulations for the tan that will create the same if not better tanning effect. Bperfect have been working with their supplier over the past year on new tan enhancing ingredients ahead of the DHA regulation change & have been testing out batches of new samples to make sure their colour payoff is still as good as before.

Not all of our tanning products be will effected, only those over 10% DHA- generally Medium, Dark and Ultra Dark tans- our Bperfect medium coconut, Bperfect silky glo & hydro glo ranges will remain the same formula as they are already below 10% DHA.

Our Bperfect med/dark, dark watermelon & ultra dark ranges are being reformulated as well as Bperfect X Jac Jossa 1 Hour Express mousse & Mrs Glam Dark + mousse.

Their new formula is starting to be made from early February onwards but it’ll take a few months to fully transition everything over to the new formula which will be available from 31st March deadline.

Their current formulas are still be available to buy online and in salon however once stock runs out we will only be reordering the new formula going forward.
